November 14, 2010 Hike #3
Although I've hiked two new peaks today, they were both bushwhacks so I haven't gotten any red-lining credit. It gets dark early now, but I still had enough time for one more really short hike. I've driven by the Russell-Colbath House many times. I decided to stop and walk the Rail 'N River Trail behind it. Here's a picture I took of a map at the parking lot.

I walked passed the barn.

I found the start of the trail.

It's a nice easy walk on a well graded trail of crushed stone. There were interpretive signs along the way giving the history of the area.

The trail goes up to Swift River which ironically was as still as could be today. An unmarked dirt path follows the river for about 50 feet before returning to the main trail.

This area was once logged for mast pines for England's ships.

I returned to the parking area and decided to take the short trail to Jigger Johnson Campground.

This was an exceptionally easy walk as well.

A couple minutes later I reached the campground and found an interpretive sign explaining who Jigger Johnson was.

I returned to my car and headed home. After all the hiking I've done, I'm still finding new places to explore in the Whites.
