I've never climbed Mount Chocorua in winter so that seemed like a good plan for the day. The parking lot off Route 16 was not plowed but a local resident let me park on his property for $3. Looking up to Mount Chocorua.

I decided to head up the Piper trail.

I had done the bottom and top of the Piper Trail but not the 2.4 miles in between.

I planned to descend via the Weetamoo Trail.

I took a side trip which was at least a tenth of a mile and very steep up to Camp Penacook Shelter.

Two month ago I missed the true summit of Bald Mountain when I came up via the Hammond Trail. I decided to give it another try before heading down the Weetamoo Trail.

I made it Bald Mountain via a short bushwhack. Just below the summit there are some nices ledges with great views.

I returned to the junction for the Weetamoo Trail where I realized it wasn't broken out. At least I was heading down.

As I neared the bottom of the Weetamoo Trail I noticed some ski tracks. They were heading in the right direction. I figured it might turn out to be a shortcut so I followed them.
Hmmm? Is that safe? I got across OK.

The ski tracks followed Chocorua River. But as I neared Route 16 the tracks began heading south away from where I wanted to go. I took a short 5 minute bushwhack to get to Route 16 where I found myself a quarter mile or so south of where I parked so I had a short roadwalk back to my car. My "shortcut" definitely did not save me any time, but it's fun to explore.
