May 2, 2009 Hike #2

After hiking Moosilauke, I drove around the corner for hike #2. I quickly found out that I had to walk a little further than I was planning. The gate was closed so I had a .5 mile road walk.

There's the trailhead.

The trail looked easy enough.

The trail was quite gentle compared to most of the trails in the Whites.
About 2/3rds of the way up, the trail started to follow nice semi-open ledges.

It sure turned into a nice day.

I had a nice view of Sandwich Dome.

There was a really nice spot with a great view just a few yards off the trail. I decided I would stop there on the way back. The Blueberry Mountain Trail goes up and over this mountain. There is a tiny spur trail that you have to watch for if you want to hit the true summit. There was no sign, but there was a small cairn. It was obvious that I needed to go up. Another 100 feet or so and I was at the 2662' summit which is marked with a small cairn.

This peak is really a subpeak of Jeffers Mountain which makes the New Hampshire 200 highest list. There were a couple steel rods in the rock at the top indicating that a firetower once stood here. The summit was wooded but offered partial views.

I headed back down to the scenic spot I passed on the way up.
There was a seat waiting for me.

I took a little nap and enjoyed the view of Moosilauke.

I returned over the same route. On the drive home I stopped to enjoy this view from Route 118.

I'm on call at work next week so it will be two weeks before my next hike. It's probably a good thing. The best thing for my sore knee would be to stay out of the mountains for a couple weeks.
