May 24, 2008

Once again I started on the Tennessee/North Carolina border as I left Allen Gap

Stop #1 for today was Little Laurel Shelter.

Obeying this speed limit sign won't be a problem.

Rhododendrons

The weather was overcast, but I decided to take this short side trail.

No view yet.

Someone found an alternate way to get to the top of this mountain.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

OK, I guess I'll take another side trip.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Still no view.

Trilliums

'Exposed Ridgeline' All right! That's a hiker's delight as long as the weather isn't bad.
I hope the weather clears for this.

Looks like the weather is beginning to clear.

Ah ha! That's the view I've been looking for.

Here's a 360° video clip from Firescald Knob.

It doesn't get better than this!!

I took a break at the next shelter, Jerry's Cabin.

Heading up Coldspring Mountain

Next I made my way up to the top of Big Butt. No foolin', that was the name. The trail doesn't go quite to the top. The 4838' summit is a few yards off the trail. There's a bit of a view if you are tall enough (which I wasn't). I've finished all the major climbs for the day, so I'm looking forward to heading down to Devil's Fork Gap. This smooth section of trail was nice.

I'm still surprised how many cemeteries, grave markers, and memorials are located right on the A.T.

I stopped at Flint Mountain Shelter . . .

. . .where I met a section hiker. We've actually crossed paths several times, but this was my first opportunity to talk with him.

"Do you have a trail name?" I asked.

"Yes, it's Coop," he replied.

"How did you come up with that?" I asked

"People have always called me that. My last name is Cooper."

"Well, that worked out nice."

Less than 3 miles to go.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Hey, I wasn't supposed to have any more 'up' today.

As I neared Devil's Fork Gap, I could make out the trailhead parking lot through the trees. I didn't see our car, but a moment later I saw Lynn drive up right on time.
