After bagging Mount Davis in Pennsylvania, Lynn and I set off to bag Backbone Mountain, Maryland's highpoint. Although the peak is in Maryland, it is best reached from West Virginia. As we neared the trailhead, we saw a sign for the smallest church in 48 states.

The church only seats twelve. (The last row of pews is not shown in the picture.)

About halfway up, we met two people coming down in a four wheeled drive truck.

The trail turned to the left where we followed some cairns.

Inside the mailbox were certificates. I took one but it was a soggy mess by the time I got back down.

That's two state highpoints for today. Let's make it three by going after Spruce Knob in West Virginia.
