July 2005

Lynn helped me out today. We took both vehicles. We parked the car at East B Hill Road and then drove the truck around to South Arm Road where she dropped me off and said 'Good Bye.' Snoopy and I made our way up Moody mountain to enjoy the view.

I looked ahead to Hall Mountain.

I had noticed on the map that the trail down Moody was extremely steep. I wondered if Snoopy would be all right. He was fine. If anyone had trouble it was me, but there were lots of ladders and steel bars to assist. The ladder looks horizontal in this picture but that is because I had the camera pointed at such a steep angle.

At the bottom of Moody we took a break at beautiful Sawyer Brook before starting the long steep climb up Hall Mountain. I stopped for a rest at the Hall Leanto which was right on the trail.

I continued up to Wyman Mountain where I met a section hiker enjoying the view.

"Are you headed north or south?" I asked
"North. My name is Shadow."
"I'm Eric. I just started hiking the AT and don't have a trailname yet. How long have you been on the trail."
"Six weeks. I started in New York."
"How are you set on food?" I asked.
"OK, I guess."
"I brought extra if you need some."
"I can't give you anything."
"I don't want anything. I have trail mix and an apple." This is where I learned that fresh fruit on the trail was a real treat for those who have been on the trail a while.
"You have an apple!" he exclaimed.
I handed him the apple.
"Trail magic," he said, waving the apple.
I continued on my way when I heard the crisp sound of teeth biting into an apple. Then I heard "Mmmm. It's good.!" Sounds like he was enjoying it.
I made the three mile descent down to Surplus Pond ....

and another 2 mile descent down to East B Hill Road.
