July 2005

Sorry but I don't have pictures for this hike. Brent from work would join me today. While driving to the trailhead, we couldn't help but notice the road we were on was paved and there was absolutely nothing out here.
"It sure was nice of them to pave all the way out here, so we could hike," Brent said.
"It sure was," I laughed.

We got on the AT and headed south. After about a mile, the AT crosses a brook. We took the .2 mile side trail to see Dunn Falls. We returned back to the AT and realized we couldn't cross here without getting our feet wet. We went up the brook about 50 feet and crossed. Brent likes to tease me about this saying that I have to go back and hike the 20 feet where the AT crosses the brook. I passed the white blaze on each side of the brook so by definition of a section hike, I should be all right.

We made our way up to Surplus Mountain. Unfortunately there are no views from here. We made the steep half mile descent down to the Frye Notch Leanto. Where we met a thru hiker who was about to continue north.
"There are some nice cascades ahead if you don't mind a small detour," I said.
"No detours," he said. He was definitely on a mission to finish the hike.

Brent and I rested a bit before heading back. When we got back to the brook we took the Cascade Trail back to the car.
